BSL has been training healthcare professionals for international English exams since 1971. IDP partner, British Council certified, Cambridge materials. Live 1-on-1 OET coaching for all 12 healthcare professions — profession-specific Writing and Speaking practice, 15+ mock tests, Grade B guaranteed focus.
OET (Occupational English Test) is the only English language test designed exclusively for healthcare professionals. Unlike IELTS, which tests general English, OET tests you in the language you actually use every day — medical consultations, clinical reports, patient handovers.
All four sub-tests use medical scenarios. Writing and Speaking are profession-specific — a nurse writes a referral letter, a pharmacist explains medication instructions. Your medical vocabulary is an asset, not irrelevant.
IELTS tests general English across diverse topics — architecture, tourism, environment, history. For healthcare professionals, these topics are unfamiliar and can be more challenging than medical scenarios despite equivalent English ability.
OET is available for 12 healthcare professions. BSL customises the Writing and Speaking preparation for each — you practise the clinical scenarios relevant to your specific field, not generic medical English.
OET is available in three formats. The content, marking, and scores are identical across all modes. BSL's mock tests and LMS platform are designed to mirror all three formats.
BSL's OET curriculum gives each sub-test dedicated live sessions with profession-specific material, daily practice tasks, and individual feedback. Writing and Speaking are tailored to your exact healthcare profession.
Tests understanding of spoken healthcare English in two consultation recordings — one patient consultation and one healthcare-related talk. Includes note-taking and short-answer tasks. The same for all 12 professions.
Tests reading comprehension across three task types using healthcare-related texts. Part A is a speed-reading task; Parts B and C test careful reading and detailed comprehension of longer clinical texts.
The most profession-specific sub-test. You read a case notes extract and write a letter relevant to your profession — a referral letter, discharge summary, or handover communication. Assessed on: Purpose, Content, Conciseness, Layout, Language.
A 1-on-1 role-play interview where you play a healthcare professional and the interviewer plays a patient or caregiver. Two role-play cards, 3 minutes preparation each, 5 minutes each. Assessed on: Communication (30%), Language (70%).
OET uses a letter grade system (A to E) with a corresponding numerical scale (500 to 200). Grade B (350+) is the standard requirement for most healthcare regulatory bodies worldwide.
All plans include 3 free demo classes before payment, 15+ scored mock tests, profession-specific writing practice, free study material, and LMS access.

Over a million students have trusted BSL since 1971. Here are some healthcare professionals who achieved Grade B with BSL and went on to register and work in their chosen country.
A Complete Guide for Indian Healthcare Professionals
OET Grade B (350 out of 500 per sub-test) is the gold standard required by UK NMC, UK GMC, AHPRA, Ireland NMBI, and most English-speaking healthcare regulatory bodies worldwide. Here are sub-test-by-sub-test strategies drawn from BSL’s profession-specific OET coaching for Indian healthcare professionals.
The two sub-tests where Indian healthcare professionals most commonly fall below Grade B are Writing and Speaking. Reading and Listening are generally stronger for Indian candidates with clinical experience. BSL’s live sessions focus heavily on the Writing letter format and Speaking clinical role-play, which are the most technique-dependent tasks.
The OET Writing task requires writing a referral letter, discharge letter, or transfer-of-care letter specific to your profession. Grade B Writing needs: correct letter header format (date, addressee, subject line), all case notes information addressed accurately, professional medical language appropriate to the recipient (a specialist letter uses different language from a letter to a GP), no information invented or embellished from the case notes, and a word count of 180-200 words. The most common reason Indian healthcare professionals fail Grade B in Writing is not addressing all bullet points in the case notes. BSL instructors mark every Writing task against the actual OET Writing band descriptors.
The OET Speaking test consists of two 5-minute role-plays with an interlocutor playing a patient or carer. Grade B Speaking requires: initiating the consultation appropriately, gathering information with open and closed questions, managing the patient’s concerns and emotional responses, explaining clearly in plain language (no medical jargon with patients), and closing the consultation professionally. Indian healthcare professionals often score below Grade B because they use medical terminology with patients and struggle with responding to emotional cues. BSL Speaking role-play simulations are tailored to your specific profession and realistic clinical scenarios.
OET Reading has three parts: Part A (45-minute summary task with four short texts), Part B (3 short workplace texts, multiple-choice), and Part C (2 longer healthcare articles). Indian healthcare professionals generally score well in Parts A and C because they involve healthcare-specific content. Part B, with its workplace English (notices, policies, guidelines), can be challenging because the vocabulary and register differ from clinical English. BSL Reading coaching covers all three parts with timed practice using materials from actual healthcare workplace contexts.
OET Listening has three parts: Part A (patient consultation, form-filling), Part B (six short healthcare professional discussions, multiple-choice), and Part C (two extended healthcare professional discussions, note completion and multiple-choice). Parts A and B are generally manageable for Indian healthcare professionals. Part C discussions use advanced healthcare professional-level English vocabulary. The second Part C audio is a healthcare professional interview with academic or specialist vocabulary. BSL Listening practice specifically targets Part C with accent variety and advanced healthcare vocabulary drills.
There is no substitute for full OET mock tests taken under exam conditions with profession-specific materials. BSL provides 15+ full OET mock tests across all 12 healthcare professions. Each Writing mock test includes written band-descriptor feedback identifying exactly which criteria you met and which you missed. Each Speaking mock includes recorded feedback from your BSL instructor using the OET Speaking criteria: linguistic, clinical communication, and overall communication management.
The OET Writing sub-test gives 45 minutes to write one letter of 180-200 words. This seems generous but most Indian healthcare professionals who write slowly under pressure do not finish or produce a rushed second half that loses marks. Recommended time allocation: 5 minutes to read and annotate the case notes, 5 minutes to plan the letter structure, 30 minutes to write the letter, 5 minutes to review for grammar and spelling errors. BSL timed Writing practice builds this discipline from the first session.
Which Test Is Right for You?
Most healthcare regulatory bodies now accept both OET and IELTS. The right choice depends on your profession, destination country, budget, and English background. Here is an honest comparison for Indian healthcare professionals:

The OET exam fee is AUD 587, approximately Rs 32,000 to Rs 33,000 in Indian Rupees depending on the exchange rate. This covers all four sub-tests. OET is conducted 24 times per year (twice monthly). There are 50+ OET test centres across India.
OET coaching at BSL starts from Rs 4,999/month — separate from the exam fee. Given the high exam fee, proper coaching significantly reduces the risk of a repeat attempt at Rs 32,000+. Most BSL OET students pass on their first or second attempt. Cancellation: OET can be cancelled at least 1 week before the test date for a partial refund. Rescheduling is available on the OET website.
